New Atex® project: Wolkenhain observation tower in Berlin

Aug 30, 2017

The beautiful and unusual Wolkenhain observation tower has been erected in Berlin, built using Atex® 3000 TRL textile membrane made by Valmiera Glass UK Ltd., a subsidiary of Valmieras stikla šķiedra JSC. The observation tower, designed by Kolb Ripke Architekten architect office in Berlin, is a notable landmark in the local scenery as it stands on the top of Kienberg Hill, 120 m above sea level. During the night the viewing platform is illuminated in various colours.

The basis of the idea of the tower is the architects' wish to reflect their sources of inspiration in nature: a cloud that shines over the tree tops behind the hill. The result is an impressive structure, consisting of about 170 assemblies made of steel and durable Atex® glass fibre material, with a high-quality silicone coating over the steel poles of the structure. The result creates planes of irregular shapes, making the architects' ideas reality. The light transparency of the Atex® material ensures that the tower looks finely illuminated from within, like an illuminated cloud.

And, the panoramic view from the viewing platform is beautiful. From it, visitors can see the TV tower in central Berlin and as far away as the rural vicinity of Brandenburg.
