President Zatlers addresses AmCham members
In celebration of the 91st Anniversary of the founding of Latvia, AmCham Latvia held a special luncheon featuring HE Valdis Zatlers, President of Latvia.
President Zatlers discussed the latest political and economic developments in Latvia, including the ongoing public reforms, Latvia’s image abroad and extending presidential authority.
In an open speech to AmCham members Mr. Zatlers addressed the government’s efforts in the public sector reform. “I hope next year we will be able to see what fiscal benefits have been achieved by the public sector reforms. It requires a very tough fiscal discipline, at the same time all reforms should be guided properly,” he said.
Regarding Latvia’s image abroad President Zatlers stated: “For me the image of Latvia has always been a good one. I am proud to be a Latvian. However, the country’s image has been damaged by bad performance. If we succeed with approving state budget for next year, I believe it will also improve our image. This might be the right time for foreign investors to come to Latvia.”
He stressed that for Latvia to recover, exports should be substantially increased. “I am impressed that our exports have increased in the second quarter of this year and our exporters don’t seem to be suffering, but in fact they are doing quite well,” he added.
Independence of Presidential institution, KNAB, the Ombudsman and other offices is imperative and must remain outside the political influence, Zatlers emphasized.
President also touched upon the importance of education and family in raising up the younger generation. He is patron of several organizations and projects, including the Mission Possible, the Young Guard and the Scouts.
He concluded his remarks stressing that political stability is needed in Latvia. According to Zatlers, “political stability creates fiscal stability, which then leads to economic stability.”
President also spoke on importance of good governance and rule of law. |
