The American Chamber of Commerce in Latvia (AmCham) and its partners - the United States Embassy in Latvia and the Civic Alliance of Latvia - held the Human Development Award to honor Latvia's inspirational people and to recognize the socially responsible practices of Latvia's businesses and non-profit organizations for three years in a row 2014-2016.

The purpose of the Human Development Award is to promote human development and to further prosperity of Latvia's people.

  • Raise awareness of the significance of human development in Latvia
  • Encourage social responsibility initiatives and reveal best practices
  • Honor individuals and organizations committed to investing in human development


Recognizing that social responsibility, education, health and wellbeing, welfare of children and youth are the most critical investments required for human development in Latvia, the Human Development Award will be presented in the following categories:

1. Social Responsibility Award - to honor excellence in the development of society through exceptional generosity and commitment of time, expertise and financial or organizational support.
2. Outstanding Commitment to Education Award - to honor initiatives for improving the quality of and access to education and training that enhances the well-being of people from all walks of life, and promotes education as a life-long process.
3. Exemplary Contribution to Health and Well-Being Award - to honor initiatives in regard to promotion of healthy living, and supporting and improving health and well-being of communities and individuals, and reducing health inequalities.
4. The Future of Latvia Award - to honor initiatives in regard to the enhancement of youth and children's welfare and healthy development and their rights to grow up in a loving and stable environment, including in foster and guardian families.


Nominees' accomplishments are evaluated by the jury of recognized experts based on the following criteria:

  • Impact - demonstrable impact on society.
  • Sustainability - sustainable development.
  • Innovation - Innovative, creative, original approaches, successfully adapted to local conditions.
  • Inspiration - actions serving as a model of practice for others.
On April 15th during the 3rd Annual Human Development Award of Latvia at the Latvian National Library, the winners of the Human Development Award 2016 were announced: Zigmunds Za─╝enko, Accenture Latvia, Children's Palliative Care Society and Andris Berzins, Co-Founder of TechHub Riga.
