Reshaping Riga

Martins Stakis, Mayor of Riga addressed over 70 members and guests on his vision to reshape the capital of Latvia into a well-governed, sustainable, accessible and connected city offering the best quality of life. He outlined his priorities: identifying corruption risks, ensuring good governance, improving traffic and housing infrastructure.

According to Mr. Stakis, his ojective is to establish a municipality governed by the rule of law. He aims at reorganizing several boards and departments in order to implement best governance practices in the municipal enterprises. The Riga Tourism Development Bureau is being reorganized into the Riga investment agency to be launched in May 2021 to focus more on attracting investment to the city. He emphasized that major part of the budget for 2021 will be used to support the following areas: infrastructure, education, social security and the environment.  

Mayor Stakis engaged in a lively discussion with members and answered a lot of questions. We would like to thank the Mayor for the opportunity to hear from him directly and our members for their active participation!

About the Speaker: 
Mārtiņš Staķis graduated from Tukums Rainis Gymnasium, obtained a bachelor's degree at Faculty of Business, Management and Economics of the University of Latvia, specializing in municipal organization. Studied in management education program in Helsinki, Finland.
Has been involved in entrepreneurship since 1999 as the Marketing Director of the “Narvesen” chain, and since 2010 as a private entrepreneur, “Illy” coffee distributor and owner of “Innocent Café”. Mārtiņš Staķis has moderated the Latvian Television program on spiritual and ethical issues “Saknes debesīs”, participates in the National Guard, has been a volunteer coach in the educational program MOT, is one of the founders of the choir “Pa Saulei”. 
In August 2017, Mārtiņš Staķis participated in the founding of political party “Kustība Par!” and became a member of the 13th Saeima and also was a Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Defense. He was the leader of the "Attīstībai/Par!+PROGRESĪVIE" list for the elections of Riga City Council. After the elections, Mr. Staķis gained the support of the majority of Riga City Council deputies, becoming the Chairman of the Riga City Council.
