Over 500 people celebrate U.S. Independence Day at a family picnic

On Saturday, July 1st, more than 500 guests gathered at a delightful picnic to commemorate the 247th Anniversary Independence of the United States. The event, organized by AmCham, embraced American traditions, food, music, and various activities.

Our gracious host, John Tully, who also serves as the President of AmCham, welcomed everyone to his residence in Mezaparks, setting the stage for a day filled with vibrant energy and enthusiasm.

The festivities commenced with warm greetings from John Tully, U.S. Ambassador Christopher Robinson, and co-host Dmitrijs Latisevs, the Chairman of the Board at BluOr Bank. The Latvian National Guard Orchestra and the talented vocalist Annija Dziesma Teteris presented the national anthems and classic big band hits, while the band ‘Four Collective’ delighted the audience with more American music favorites.

In his address to the guests, John Tully expressed, "Today, as we celebrate the oldest continuous democracy in the world, let us recognize the significance of democratic values, the rule of law, and human dignity. Especially in the current geopolitical context, we must continue to uphold and defend these fundamental principles that we share. These values are truly worth celebrating."

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Robinson emphasized: “On July 4th we celebrate the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, a remarkable document that contains one of the most famous and transformational sentences in the English language: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” 247 years later, these words remain a beacon of hope and opportunity.  History shows that the work of freedom and liberty is never done.   It continues today in the United States, as we strive to build a more perfect union.  We know that for all of the effort it takes, our democracy is worth it.  It is the only way to ensure that people are truly able to live lives of dignity and freedom and opportunity.”   

The event involved a wide array of festivities, including a diverse selection of food and beverages, a charity raffle, a quiz highlighting the history and traditions of the 4th of July, contests sponsored by Procter & Gamble and Strategic Staffing Solutions, and board games provided by BluOr Bank. Children had the opportunity to engage in various activities, such as enjoying a bouncy castle, face painting, and creating giant bubbles. The guests were treated to a delectable spread of food, including burgers, pulled pork barbecue, chicken nuggets, nachos, popcorn, samosas, wraps, and ice cream.

In addition to the joyous festivities, the charity raffle raised a remarkable EUR 3100, which will support five principal charities endorsed by AmCham, focused on improving the health and well-being of Latvia's women and children.
