Alliance against Corruption in Latvia welcomes a new manager

Aug 14, 2018

As of August 7th Ms. Ieva Bloma has taken on the duties of Manager of the Alliance against Corruption in Latvia.

Ms. Bloma's professional interests focus on regulatory quality, regulatory costs & reduction of administrative burden, and management of regulatory impact assessment systems. From 2005-2012, Ms. Bloma worked on various public policy issues both in Latvia (State Chancellery, Ministry of Economics) and Armenia (EU Twinning project on strengthening regulatory management system in Armenia). In the recent years, she has carried out research projects at the European University Institute in Florence and the European Trade Union Institute in Brussels. Ms. Bloma holds Master's degrees from various European universities (University of Latvia, Aix-Marseille University, London School of Economics) and currently is a Ph.D. candidate at the European University Institute (Florence) where she is preparing a dissertation on the enforcement of EU health and safety directives in the Baltic States.

The Alliance against Corruption in Latvia is a voluntary and informal co-operation between Latvia's law enforcement agencies, government, business, and civil society that wish to see Latvia as an honest and thriving country. The Alliance organizes educational activities, conferences, seminars, public debates, and special events to raise awareness about the negative effects corruption has on societal development and encourages individuals to report instances of corruption.

The Alliance is already supported by various business organisations (the American Chamber of Commerce in Latvia, the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia, the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce in Latvia, and the Irish Latvian Chamber of Commerce) and individual entrepreneurs, law enforcement agencies (the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau, the Competition Council, the State Revenue Service, the State Audit Office, and the State Police) and the State Chancellery, as well as representatives of civil society (Dainis Īvāns, Valters Nollendorfs, Anders Paalzow, Inna Šteinbuka, Tālavs Jundzis, Andris Sprūds, Andris Vilks, Uģis Gruntmanis, Valts Kalniņš, Normunds Bergs, Ieva Morics, Ernests Jenavs, Jānis Kreilis, Kristaps Grasis Guntis Bērziņš).

The first task for Ms. Bloma is to elaborate the Working Plan of the Alliance and to advocate for the adoption of the Law on Whistleblowing. The draft Law on Whistleblowing has passed its first reading and is soon to be discussed in the second reading in the Saeima.
